Powerpoint and lecture tracing the activities of naturalist David Douglas on his several trips through the Columbia Gorge in the 1820s and 1830s. Sporting with Seals David Douglas in the Columbia Gorge Between 1824-1834, Scottish naturalist David Douglas made more than a dozen trips through the Columbia River Gorge during all seasons of the year. He camped at tribal villages, portaged the major falls, traded for fish and information at the Dalles, made extensive guided treks on both the Washington and Oregon sides, and collected flora and fauna at a furious rate. This slide presentation will trace Douglas’s adventures through a vibrant section of the river, with a particular focus on the human and natural history he witnessed along the way.
