Between 1825 and 1833, Scottish naturalist David Douglas made seven crossings of the Columbia bar and several harrowing canoes rides from Astoria to Baker Bay. Along the way he met a parade of sea captains, fur agents, and tribal families, made the first systematic collections of flora and fauna along the lower Columbia, and left behind a fascinating store of lore and relationships. This presentation by Spokane based teacher and naturalist, Jack Nisbet, will explore them all.
